2011 has been a wonderful year for us as we continue to be blessed with good music, fun and loving family and friends, lower blood pressure and cholesteral :), fun festivals, and somewhat good basset hounds. (hey--they turned over all the trash cans in the house the other day.)

To banjo friends--Thanks to banjo builders, Lo Gordon (Cedar Mountain Banjos), & John Bowlin (John Bowlin 1865 fretless) for including my music for their interviews on the DVD series that Craig Evans is producing on independent American banjo builders. I've seen parts of it and it is awesome. :)

To dulcimer friends--Bob ordered me a Timberhill butterfly dulcimer for Christmas and Paul Conrad (the builder) just takes my breath away with the beautiful intarsia woodworking he did. If you see me this year or next, ask to see it :) Also, I was very pleased to win first place this October at the Transylvania (Brevard,NC) Old Time Music contest. :)

To Cox family-- Bob and I will be hosting Christmas Eve dinner again this year at our home with the extended Cox family and friends. Our daughter, Natalie and son, Gordy, will be joining us here in town, and Sidney will probably join us viA SKYPE from Tokyo. :) We are having the big Greek dinner, so I'm buying Georgia pecans, and our Meyer's Lemon tree is heavy with fruit--so I'll be baking baklava very soon. :)Please email me soon with a head count of how many in your extended family will be attending Christmas Eve dinner and whether or not you would like to do book/movie exchange again this year--or something different?

Couldn't help myself--just bought this walnut and sassafrass version concert Simmerman dulcimer. It has a lovely tone. Loud, but warm. I love it!

The new Simmerman arrived this week. Walnut sides and back with a Sassafrass top. There is a new type of bridge on this one--much longer than the ones on my other Simmermans. The sound is warm and loud. Very pretty, but different than the ones with other woods.
I am really enjoying this dulcimer!

The schedules for the Florida Folk Festival over the Memorial Day
weekend 2007 are online. There are quite a few dulcimer events
(workshops, jam, performances) with several mountain dulcimerists and
there are some hammered dulcimer events too.

The schedules just came out yesterday--they are massive--so just take

Also, I will be teaching a mountain dulcimer workshop on Friday
(5PM), a banjo workshop on Saturday in the "Banjo Seed" area, and
will be at the Banjo Contest on Sunday.

I haven't studied the schedule--but I did see David Bede, Jan Milnar,
Susan Boyer Haley, & Ray Belanger's names on the schedule for various
dulcimer events during the weekend. There are probably more. This
festival is enormous and fun. It is reasonably priced and once you are
in--there is no additional charge for any of the workshops, jams,
performances etc. I think there is a small entry fee for the fiddle
and banjo contests.

Besides tons of international and domestic folk music--there are dance
and storytelling events, demonstrations, arts and crafts and food
vendors (good international fare--not just hot dogs and cokes) This
year's main Florida theme is Florida Cracker Cowboys--and they will
have some real ones there. (yes--they do still exist and you'll
recognize them immediately when you see them.

Bob and I will be polishing up our only cowboy tune on the mountain
dulcimer for our performances.

ps. If you are coming from out of state--try and find a motel room in
nearby Lake City. Yes, the fires are still burning--but so far the
Stephen Foster Park is not on fire and we are hopeful that they got
some of the rain that we got in Tallahassee on Sunday. Hopefully, the
fires will be out by then.
We don't have any fires in Tally, but there are so many in surrounding
counties that we have been breathing ash in the air for a couple weeks
now. Everyone is staying inside and running humidifiers--the air is
so dry I feel like I'm back in New Mexico.

Here’s a two hour “hands on” workshop to the old time banjo. If you have a functional five string banjo and want to get started on a frailing motion with your right hand and begin a simple old time tune with your left—this is the workshop for you. Short Bio

Mary Z. Cox – is a banjoholic with 12 banjos. When forced to stop buying banjos, Mary entered clawhammer contests and won two top-notch banjos in one year as prizes. She’s been playing since she was 12 and is a past Florida champion. She has recorded five CDs, has written four banjo tab books, and has been published in Banjo Newsletter. Today, Mary plays concerts, teaches at camps, and records with family and friends. She enjoys introducing students of all ages to new tunes, techniques, and the banjo life.

Mary Z. is also a dulcimaniac with 7 mountain dulcimers, a past Florida Mountain dulcimer champion, as well as the first place winner in the 2006 Uncle Dave Macon Days in Tennessee. Her “Dulcimer Fandango” CD is a park favorite in the Stephen Foster gift shop.

Many of you know that I have been mostly playing my Modern Mountain Dulcimer and my Goncala Alves Simmerman at festivals and workshops the last couple of years and they are really lovely dulcimers and I enjoy playing them. But Betty Schneider asked me a few months ago, "Don't you ever play your Blue Lion anymore?" Her comment prompted me to pull it out from underneath the bed an begin playing it again. I'd forgotten how pretty its tone rings. Then I packed it in the RV to go to Tennessee and played it in the Uncle Dave Macon Days contest and won. Actually, its the very same dulcimer I won first place in the Florida championships in 2003. Must be my lucky dulcimer. :) Of course, I had the lucky entry number too--number 13! :)

This was a really fun festival--contests with cash prizes, lots of good music and dancing, food and craft vendors. We were total strangers and folks were friendly at every turn.
And--I won first place in the mountain dulcimer contest. It was well attended with serious competitors. I did not know any of them--but they played so well that I was surprised and delighted to win. I played a North Alabama fiddle tune, "Step Around Johnny."

Hello,
It has been such a busy year, that I've decided to make my dulcimer blog my Dulcimer Fandango webpage as the old one takes more time to maintain and I will be able to bring you quicker updates on the blog.
Even though we have been doing more and more banjo related events--we always bring a mountain dulcimer or two and do a few numbers in concert because even the banjo folks love them once they hear them live.
Here is a photo of Bob and I playing morning song at the John C. Campbell School last month.

Here is Kevin Roth's big beautiful dulcimer made from a Hawaiin guitar. I was lucky to be called in the middle of the night to come and play it and test for the luthier so it would be set up just right for Kevin. :) This dulcimer has a very big, but beautiful tone--lots of strings!

Lets start by posting some photos of last Saturday's "Stretching With the Dulcimer" workshop.
What a fun group of dulcimer players! Kim Lippy sent me these photos. The workshop was at Stephen Foster State Park in White Springs Florida. I played my lacewood and spruce Modern Mountain dulcimer to teach class.
Many of the group stayed on for the Cracker Coffeehouse that evening and afterwards for a jam and coffee and cookies at the Telford Inn.
